Hydro-Gear Transaxle Fluid & Level Checks

The fluid recommended for Hydro-Gear transmissions and pumps is a 20W-50 motor oil or 15W-50 synthetic motor oil.

If the machine has oil reservoirs, they are mounted to the frame behind the seat, for easy access and oil level check accessibility.

If the machine does not have reservoirs, but has independent transaxles, then they are considered to be maintenance free. As long as the machine is performing correctly, then Hydro-Gear recommends not to open up the transmission to check or add to oil level.

If you are seeing a performance issue or stronger whine to the transaxles, then definitely check the oil level first. Checking the fluid level on these transaxles can be a little more difficult.

Oil level can be measured at the vent hole/tube towards the back of the transaxle, on top. Sometimes this hole can be accessed from above the frame, but if not, the transaxles may need to be removed (or just dropped down) and set on a level surface.

Clean the area around the tube and take care so no dirt or debris falls into the hole, before taking the tube and grommet off.

Note: The more this vent is opened the more likely dirt will fall in and damage the transaxle.

Use some type of dipstick, such as a metal rod/wire and measure down from the top of the case. The level should be at 1" to 1.5" from the top of the case. Add the recommended engine oil as needed and Do Not overfill the transaxle.
